SCOPE
Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, the incumbent serves as a resource person for faculty, students and staff in regard, but not limited to the maintenance, fabrication, repair, assembly, operation, demonstration and proper use of laboratory equipment. This may also include manufacturing support. The role requires a solid understanding of basic engineering principles, practical skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Maintain MIAE laboratory equipment and facilities. 
•    Ensure adequate materials and supplies 
•    Initiate and prepare purchase documentation. Prepare cost estimates. 
•    Operate a variety of hand powered, and machine tools, (e.g., welding machines, grinders, sanders, presses, mills, lathes, band saws, meters, measuring devices, instrumentation, data acquisition, and 3D printers). 
•    Test and calibrate equipment.
•    Support laboratory demonstrators, faculty and staff. 
•    Demonstrate the use of laboratory equipment to students and faculty. 
•    Write detailed procedures for operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. 
•    Supervise students in preparation, fabrication, and testing for teaching projects. 
•    Work with undergraduate and graduate students on their projects.
•    Instruct, supervise, and monitor safety procedures. 
•    Ensure laboratories follow established safety protocols. 
•    Ensure operational readiness and safety of machinery, tools, and equipment; perform maintenance and repairs.
•    Participate in the Health and Safety Program, adhering to relevant regulations (Occupational Safety and Health Act, WHMIS). 
•    Actively contribute to a safe laboratory environment.
•    Plan and complete projects to develop mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, or structural components and equipment. 
•    Assist in the preparation of reports, laboratory experiments, analyses, and correspondence.
•    Work cooperatively with others to meet changing departmental and faculty requirements.
•    Other technical duties may be assigned as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
•    Technical (3-year) DEC in Mechanical Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance, Electrical or Electro/Mechanical Technology and a minimum of four years of related experience required.
•    Experience with specific aerospace-related areas (e.g., maintenance, repair, aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, composite materials) an asset. 
•    Ability to solve complex technical problems. 
•    Ability to lead and train others in technical engineering support work. 
•    Understanding of electronics and mechanical engineering terminology, laboratory processes, and typical equipment. 
•    Ability to use technical laboratory equipment and read engineering drawings. 
•    Strong ability to operate machining and fabrication tools. 
•    Experience with specific equipment relevant to aerospace engineering (e.g., hydraulics, wind tunnels, propulsion systems). Experience with micro-controllers, data acquisition, PLC devices and programming, electronics, circuit design, oscilloscopes, and multi-meters an asset.
•    Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken and written French. 
•    Good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and MS Teams and ability to learn new software. 
o    Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. 
•    Advanced skills in CAD software and fabrication techniques an asset.  
•    Certifications or training in relevant safety procedures (e.g., WHMIS, first aid, confined space entry) an asset.
•    Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities, including lifting/carrying/moving up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) without assistance and over 45 kg (100 lbs.) with assistance. 
•    Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and enroll in relevant university programs.
•    This position requires a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening work, potentially up to five evenings per week depending on the semester's lab schedule.
