Master thesis: Novel broadband dynamic vibration absorber development (d/f/m)

Are you looking for an internship and want to get to know the work of a material scientist? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the Airbus CRT team as an intern (d/f/m)!

  • Location: Taufkirchen/ Ottobrunn

  • Start: October 2025

  • Duration: 6 months

Airbus is a global pioneer in aeronautics, space and defence related services, creating cutting-edge technologies. Combining European heritage with global outreach, the diversity of our talent and technology drives innovation, integration and internationalization. Airbus CRT is the central research domain of the Airbus company, in charge of fundamental research for all Airbus divisions.

The proposed work addresses a critical need in the aerospace industry for lightweight, effective, and passive vibration control solutions. High performance, lightweight composite materials which are used in aircraft fuselages offer significant fuel efficiency benefits, however face a considerable challenge in terms of vibration and noise control. In fact, composites possess inherently lower damping characteristics compared to traditional metallic alloys.

This Master thesis will be dedicated to the design, numerical modeling, fabrication, and testing of innovative and beyond-state-of-the-art fluid-particle dampers for the reduction of vibrations and noise in a composite aircraft fuselage bay. Broadband damping performance in the range from 50 to 2,000 Hz and weight savings will be the drivers for the new dampers development.

As a Master student at Airbus CRT you will be a member of the materials team, be in charge of your MSc project, participate in technical project meetings with our customers and with our technical experts.

Your exciting tasks

  • Modelling and understanding of the vibration modes of a baseline cantilever swinger and of a real fuselage bay with frames and omega stringers - e.g. using Actran and/or Nastran

  • Modelling and understanding of the SoA tuned mass dampers (TMDs) currently used for vibration control

  • Design, numerical modelling, fabrication of dampers, integration on composite structures, and testing of new types of fluid-particle dampers for vibration control

  • Optimization of damping system to maximize damping and minimize weight penalty applying machine learning methods like surrogate modelling

  • Experimental testing of damping performance in an acoustic lab

  • If time allows: design and 3D printing of a functional demonstrator
