Airbus Helicopters is the world’s largest helicopter manufacturer and the company’s site at Oxford Airport is Britain’s civil helicopter hub.

AHUK offers considerable experience in helicopter sales, bespoke completions, maintenance and spares support. Its in-house engineering capabilities include design, customisation, installation, flight-testing and certification, as well as technical support, maintenance, training and the supply of spares for civil and military applications.

AHUK is the MoD’s chosen provider of helicopters and maintenance for its Defence Helicopter Flying school (referred to as MFTS) located in RAF Shawbury (Shropshire) and RAF Valley (Anglesey).

Overview

The Business Improvement Apprentice will play a key role in supporting the team’s initiatives to enhance business processes, streamline administration, and leverage Management Information Systems (MIS) for data-driven decision-making. This role is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring professional to develop analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills while gaining hands-on experience in dashboard creation, data visualization, and process mapping.

As part of the Apprenticeship you will study and work towards a Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (If required) and a Level 3 Software Development Technician Apprenticeship. The college learning will be based at one of the Abingdon & Witney based colleges. The duration will be 13 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment. It will be delivered via Work-based training with your employer, Day release during term time (approximately 36 days per year), Approximately four on-site assessment visits per year, Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required). Lastly, Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work.

Key Responsibilities

Process Improvement & Data Analysis

  • Support the assessment of current business processes and help identify areas for improvement.

  • Assist in gathering and analyzing data to support decision-making and operational performance tracking.

  • Learn how to use Google and Skywise dashboarding tools to create visual reports and insights.

Process Mapping & Documentation

  • Work with the team to document workflows, process maps, and improvement strategies.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining clear documentation for projects, ensuring all process changes are well-documented and accessible.

System & Dashboard Development

  • Learn to develop and maintain dashboards in Google Looker, Skywise, and other business intelligence tools.

  • Support the team in refining data visualization to communicate key business metrics effectively.

  • Help translate business requirements into actionable data insights.

Project Support & Administration

  • Assist in coordinating business improvement projects, ensuring tasks and deadlines are met.

  • Support change management initiatives, ensuring smooth transitions for new processes and tools.

  • Provide administrative assistance to the team, including scheduling meetings, tracking actions, and maintaining project records.

Stakeholder Engagement & Training

  • Work with various teams across the business to support process changes and technology adoption.

  • Participate in meetings and training sessions to develop knowledge of business transformation methodologies.

  • Support training initiatives by preparing materials and assisting in workshop facilitation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Essential

  • Interest in business process improvement and data analysis.

  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets and data visualization tools.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to learn new technologies and systems quickly.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills, with a willingness to collaborate with different departments.

  • A proactive and adaptable mindset, eager to learn and take on new challenges.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with business intelligence software such as Google Looker, Skywise, or Power BI.

  • Some experience in creating process maps or workflow diagrams.

  • Basic understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, or Agile methodologies.

  • Knowledge of aviation, aerospace, or MRO operations.

Education, Qualifications, and Training

Essential

  • Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English.

  • Studying towards or recently completed an A-level, BTEC, or equivalent qualification in STEM, Business, IT, or Data Analytics.

Desirable

  • An interest in pursuing further education or training in data analytics, business process management, or operational performance.

  • Some exposure to coding (Python, SQL) or data tools is beneficial but not required.
