The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) at the University of Miami invites applications for a Software Engineer to support the development, deployment, and research application of advanced airborne remote sensing technologies for environmental monitoring. Housed within the Rosenstiel School and led by Dr. Ved Chirayath, ACES specializes in remote sensing and Earth science technology innovation.

The Software Engineer will assist in designing and refining algorithms like Active Fluid Lensing and MiDAR. This role includes software development for real-time data processing, supporting field campaign operations—including deploying unmanned aerial systems (UAS)—and contributing to lab codebases, remote sensing workflows, and scientific manuscript preparation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Performs duties and responsibilities under minimal supervision)

Software Development and Algorithm Design 
•    Design and refine algorithms to enhance Active Fluid Lensing and MiDAR data processing.
•    Build and maintain tools for object detection, image reconstruction, and spectral analysis.
•    Contribute to software toolchains that support airborne and underwater imaging platforms.


Data Processing and Scientific Computing 
•    Develop and operate data pipelines for processing multispectral and fluid lensing datasets.
•    Perform data analysis to support remote sensing fieldwork and scientific publications.
•    Build visualization tools and support reproducible data workflows for ongoing research projects.


Field Operations and UAS Support 
•    Participate in domestic and international field campaigns, including drone operations and data collection.
•    Assist in mission planning, equipment testing, and troubleshooting software in the field.
•    Provide in-field support to ensure smooth data capture and integrity.


Research Collaboration and Publications

•    Contribute to research papers, technical reports, and manuscript preparation.
•    Support generation of figures, visualizations, and supplementary code for scientific outputs.
•    Collaborate with researchers and students to meet project milestones.


Lab Development and Communication
•    Support lab infrastructure, including documentation, code repositories, and internal workflows.
•    Provide technical mentorship to student researchers and visiting teams.
•    Coordinate through Microsoft Teams or other agreed-upon platforms to help improve communication strategies within ACES.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•    Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or R).
•    Experience with image analysis, computational imaging, or autonomous sensing systems.
•    Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate in interdisciplinary environments.
•    Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and problem-solving skills.


Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
