In June 2025, Populous acquired Fentress Studios, significantly broadening the scope and scale of aviation design services that we can offer clients across the globe. Our Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Practice is looking for a Head of Aviation based in our Putney studio to grow our award-winning aviation design practice.
 
About the Role
 
We are seeking a visionary and dynamic Head of Aviation to spearhead our aviation design practice across the UK, Middle East, Europe and Africa. This executive-level position is responsible for leading the strategic growth, design excellence, business development, and thought leadership within the aviation sector. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in airport and aviation facility design, strong industry relationships, and a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver world-class solutions for airport authorities, airlines, and government agencies. This role will collaborate with the region’s Managing Director to develop a strategic plan for market growth. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to sell professional services, build effective project teams, and execute on our client’s vision. Exceptional communication skills and a track record of fostering strong client and strategic partner relationships are essential.
 
Key responsibilities include:  
  • Develop and implement a regional growth strategy for the firm’s aviation architecture practice.
  • Serve as the face of the firm’s aviation market, elevating brand visibility and regional positioning.
  • Lead major pursuits, including go/no-go decisions, teaming strategies, and proposal development.
  • Oversee design excellence and innovation across aviation projects.
  • Collaborate with design directors and technical leaders to ensure project success from concept through construction.
  • Provide high-level project oversight and mentorship to design and technical teams.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing clients and industry stakeholders and new aviation clients and partnerships.
  • Represent the firm and present at industry events, conferences, webinars and organizations.
  • Mentor emerging leaders and grow a high-performance aviation design team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and accountability across all offices.
  • Assist in recruiting and retaining top talent aligned with the aviation market.
  • Establish annual business plans and revenue targets for the aviation sector.
  • Collaborate with operations and finance leaders to ensure project profitability and efficient resource allocation.
  • Maintain prospecting information and manage leads in our CRM.
  • Understanding of how to negotiate profitable contracts and mitigate risk for the company.
  • Deliver excellent service, ask clients for feedback, and serve as a trusted advisor.
 
Key requirements include:
  • Strong leadership and self-management skills, with the ability to independently drive follow-through.

  • Strategic thinker with strong business development acumen and deep relationships in the aviation sector.

  • Proven experience in managing consultant, vendor and business relationships.
  • Dynamic presentation skills adaptable to both casual and structured settings.
  • Energetic and positive attitude with a proactive and resourceful approach.
  • Awareness of market trends and client sector developments to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Architectural licensure.
  • Extensive experience in airport terminal design, aviation facility planning, and team leadership.
  • A compelling track record of winning and delivering a portfolio of built aviation work, including large hub and international airports.
  • Deep understanding of airport design standards and protocols.
  • Active engagement in industry organizations.
