What you will be doing:

Pilot state owned multi-engine and single-engine fixed wing aircraft on wheels and floats transporting departmental staff and supplies to support programmatic operations and/or enforcement missions. Duties include safe transportation of departmental staff to and from field camps and low altitude flights in support of stream enumeration, fish surveys, and oversight of fishing fleet activities. This position requires highly specialized flying; frequently operating out of unimproved landing strips, beaches, lakes and lagoons in unpredictable weather and over hazardous terrain. This position serves as the lead pilot for regional operations, establishing task priorities and assigning work. The off season is in Kodiak from approximately September through April and in Chignik for the summer field season approximately May through August and possibly through September. Off-season duties include maintenance, repair, alteration, and annual inspections of five Commercial Fisheries aircraft based in Kodiak. Maintains aviation maintenance and service records for each aircraft according to FAA and department standards. Serves as custodian for regional aircraft and maintenance/hangar facility and maintains a comprehensive inventory of aircraft parts, support and service equipment. Assists in the management of aircraft operational and maintenance budgets.

Our organization, mission and culture:
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game's mission is to manage, protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources of Alaska. The primary goals are to ensure that Alaska's renewable fish and wildlife resources and their habitats are conserved and managed on the sustained yield principle, and the use and development of these resources are in the best interest of the economy and well-being of the people of the state. The aircraft section’s primary responsibilities are ensuring that returning salmon are provided sufficient opportunity to migrate to their spawning streams. The information that is gathered from these aerial surveys is essential to the management and sustainable harvest of commercial, sport, and subsistence salmon fisheries. This position directly contributes to the successful management of commercial fisheries.

The benefits of joining our team:
This position enables the incumbent to gain valuable experience working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) observing the prosecution of commercial salmon fisheries in Alaska. The aircraft program operates in some of the most remote and interesting locations in Alaska.  This position also provides access to a wide array of recreational opportunities in a pristine environment and some of the best wildlife viewing Alaska has to offer.  The aircraft program is a dedicated program that is unique to the department commercial fisheries division. As such and because of the importance to Westward Region Salmon and herring management, the aircraft program is secure and priority program.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is in Kodiak from approximately September through April and on the Alaska Peninsula from May through August and sometimes September. Pilot housing is provided at Sand Point, Chignik and Cold Bay at no cost. This position will initially be based in Chignik with opportunities to relocate to Sand Point or Cold Bay as the mission need arises.
